Kikrpatrick Principle 3. Business partnership is necessary to bring about positive ROE. A bit cliched but oh how true this is, we need to build partnerships within our organisations. However L&D does not control the performance of people on the job so how can we be expected to deliver results?

Well, we can’t, it’s up to the person and their manager to do this. Research has shown time and again (and I’m sure your own experience is the same) that if we rely on training alone, only 15% of people will actually do things differently, in a sustained manner, on the job. So, if we really want to help the organisation deliver results, the role of L&D can’t be to just deliver the learning. Our job is to partner with senior stakeholders and line managers/supervisors and to be the architects of a complete package, before, during and after any learning that encourages, supports, rewards and monitors behaviours. We have to influence what people are doing on the job aimed at the ultimate destination we identified with stakeholders (Kirkpatrick principles 1& 2). Although it is the job of the line manager to coach, support, encourage, reward and hold accountable the staff member to perform the behaviours on the job, our job is to build the package of support with them. One other step we need to take is to actually identify the behaviours that we need to see happening on the job, these are the few things that need to be performed consistently to obtain the results expected by our stakeholders. These aren’t general competencies, they are specific, observable and measurable behaviours. The more we can do to get a complete support ana accountability package in place, the more likely the behaviours are to take hold. Kirkpatrick principle 3 is about the role of the L&D team to partner with the business to identify the few critical behaviours and to help build and implement the support package that will ensure the behaviours take hold, this is all about building a partnership. If we do this, we have the hope of actually creating value which is Kirkaptrick principle 4. Value must be created before it can be demonstrated
