Kirkpatrick Foundational Principles - A summary

The Kirkpatrick Foundational Principles are the key beliefs underpinning Kirkpatrick training evaluation.

The Kirkpatrick foundational principles:

Principle 1. The end is the beginning

Know the destination and the best way to get there before you design any learning

Principle 2. Return on expectations (ROE) is the ultimate indicator of value.

Understand what key stakeholders really expect in terms of results and performance

Principle 3. Business partnership is necessary to bring about positive ROE

Work with senior stakeholders to understand the business need and work with line managers to help drive behaviours and performance

Principle 4. Value must be created before it can be demonstrated.

A complete package of support and accountability is required before, during and after any learning.

Principle 5. A compelling chain of evidence demonstrates your bottom-line value.

Provide credible evidence to stakeholders that demonstrates the contribution of each factor including learning

If you’d like to know a little more about the Kirkpatrick principles, I’ve written about each one on our website blog page along with some handy checklists and job aids you might find useful
